Description

Late 18th/early 19th century walled, courtyard, approximately
100' x 100'. East and west sides of square filled by 2 cruck
framed ranges, the north side by cart shed, stables and byre
and to south an implement shed; sheep tanks fill part of
square. Rubble, some white-washed. Early long, low east range
comprising louvred hay barn and byre with remains of 4 pairs
of crucks in byre; corrugated iron roof. Slightly later large
Kintail type barn fills west side of square, with centre
winnowing doors in each long wall and remainder of walling
composed of 4 wide louvred vents, from which the cruck blades
supportng roof are now missing; louvred vent in centre of
north gable, later entrance slapped in south; corrugated iron
roof. Later L-plan 2-bay cart shed, stables and byre; 3 bay
implement shed; both with slate roofs.

Statement of Interest

Unusual courtyard steading. The barns would have formerly been

heather thatched and have had 1 or 2 pairs of crucks

rising from the cill of each vent to support the heavy thatch.
