Description

Early 20th century. A circular cast-iron pot in a common-
brick setting, with a short square-section chimney stack
abutting the south-west corner. There is a firegrate on the
north side, and a concrete ramp on the east side, to allow
nets to be loaded and unloaded. The top courses of brick in
the setting and chimney stack are capped with concrete.

Statement of Interest

This device was used for boiling fishing nets and lines in

bark extract to preserve them from decay. The practice ended

when nylon replaced cotton and linen as materials for nets,

and this is a very rare survival.
