Sinclair Macdonald, architect, Thurso, 1912. Tall symmetrical
Baronial 2-storey, 5-bay building, with central advanced tower;
coursed tooled rubble, ashlar dressings; long and short
detailing; chamfered angle at NW with small ground floor
window.
Centre round-headed hoodmoulded entrance in base of 3-storey
tower with inscription and 1912 datestone above. Bipartites in
south, east and west of 3rd storey, corbelled angle bartizans,
corbelled upper portion with crowstepped gablets with clock
faces; squat pyramidal spire with apex finial and cast-iron
weather vane. Bipartites in paired bays flanking centre porch;
corbelled angle bartizans with fishscale slated roofs and
cast-iron decorative finials; multi-pane glazing in upper
sashes. Lower 2-storey wing to rear. Corniced end stacks;
slate roof.
Pair square rubble gate piers flanking centre pedestrian
entrance; low coped retaining wall containing corner site,
returning around War Memorial at angle. Plain spearhead
railings, and pair matching carriage gates at extreme right.
Ross Institute presented to Halkirk by Mr John Ross of Dunedin,
New Zealand and late of Halkirk; opened by his son, Mr John
Sinclair Ross. Conditions of use include "no travelling
Theatrical Companies and no intoxicating drink".
