Description

Dated 1730. Large single storey and attic barn, 9 bays with
centre door in main south elevation. Harl pointed field
rubble with ashlar margins. Centre blocked door with
chamfered architraves and dated lintel with corniced panel
above, coat of arms with egg and dart motif in raised border.
Later wide segmental headed openings in outer bays, that to
left (west) now as doorway with modern slatted double doors;
to right with modern infill above cill. Similar openings to
rear, both infilled, NW with masonry. 8 small square
chamfered vents to former corn loft, grouped in fours each
side of centre door; slit vents in ground floor in all
elevations, some blocked. Middle rear door now window.
Further original entrance in west gable approached by
forestair, with lintel initialled A MK and I MK; flat skews
with moulded undersides, and triangular stops to skewputts.
Corrugated iron roof.
Large doorway slapped in east gable; interior gutted.
Remains of circular horsewalk to rear.

Statement of Interest

Mackenzies of Gairloch had and still have) strong territorial

links with Easter Ross. This barn is of East Coast type, but

it would appear that it proved too damp for drying and

storage, and the later segmental headed openings, which

would have been wattled or louvred, were slapped in order to

provide more constant through draughts to dry corn (on the

straw before threshing) and hay, in line with established

West Coast practice. Barn which would originally have been

thatched, measures approximately 80' x 17'.
