Description

John Paterson 1808, substantial additions and alterations, incorporating part of castle rebuilt 1671. Dismantled 1954. Extensive, picturesque towered and turretted, battlemented, 3-storey mansion. Roughly squared rubble with polished ashlar dressings. L-plan with service court in re-entrant angle. Large octagonal entrance tower at E with projecting buttressed porch and pointed arched entrance. Various intermediate turrets on long elevations, some enclosing stairs. Variety of windows, some hood-moulded, some bipartite. Ranges between angle tower and 1st tower to N and S with string course at wallhead (continued across towers) and battlemented.

1986 roofless ruin. Illustrations exist of castle prior to 1954. Tracing of plan at SNMR.
