Description

Early 19th century ropery and adjoining houses in linear
formation with long elevations N and S.
ROPERY: early 19th century, single storey and loft over
raised basement at W (slightly sloping site), irregular
9-bay building approximately 100' long. Harl pointed
rubble, tooled rubble dressings. 2 loft windows with
wooden shutters survive at SW; other loft windows close under
wallhead now blocked. Forestair to centre W gable loft door,
similar entrance in E gable served by long ramp. End stacks,
single (later) brick wallhead stack N and S; pantile roof
in poor condition.
INTERIOR: gutted interior.
HOUSE ADJOINING ROPERY: early 19th century, 2-storey 3-bay
house abutting and slightly set back to N of W gable of
ropery. Harled. Centre door, regular fenestration; end
stacks; slate roof in poor condition.
INTERIOR: gutted.
BACK GREEN COTTAGES ADJOINING ROPERY HOUSE: early-mid 19th
century terrace of 3 cottages at W gable of house. Single
storey and attic, 2 cottages of 2 bays and 1 (at W) of 3
bays with centre door. Harl pointed rubble; end and ridge
stacks; slate roofs.
INTERIOR: poor condition.

Statement of Interest

Ropery complex sited immediately E of Burn of Durn. Interesting industrial survival now in poor condition.
