Description

Later 16th century Z-plan. 3 storeys. Rubble; gabled;
roofless. Crow-steps. Iron-barred windows. Vaulted ground
floor. Round towers at diagonally opposite corners.
Semi-circular turnpike stair on W. side. Entrance also.
Interior modernised: Vaulted ground floor. Great Hall on 1st
Floor.

Statement of Interest

De-scheduled 23 June 2000.

Ruin. Built as manse for John Carswell (1520-75) Rector

of Kilmartin 1553-65, who translated Knox's liturgy into

Gaelic - first printed book (1567) in that language.

Acquired by Alexander Campbell, 1st of Kilmartin 1674.

Replaced c.1735 by Kilmartin House (now gone) when the estate

was acquired by Malcorns of Dunblane.
