The original house was built about 1854 by Charles Wilson for Robert Freeland of Broomward. The mansion later belonged to the Barbours family and afterward was sold to the Coates who made extensive alterations and additions. The house was reconstructed around 1926 as a Children's Home. It was under the property of Glasgow Corporation in 1955.
