Description

Honeyman and Keppie, 1898, a villa for James Raeburn Mann who
was a friend of Keppie's; Charles Rennie Mackintosh was with
the firm at that date, though not yet a partner, and elements
of the composition (eg the stair turret and the open timber
roofs) may be his, though it is probable that other designers
also worked on the house, particularly on the interior.
Largely unaltered. 2 storeys; red ashlar; slate roofs with
red ridging tiles. South (main entrance) elevation has 2
storey canted window in gabled left bay, arched inner doorway
with block detail, stair turret right, low range beyond, low
coach house/offices wing to rear. Variety of glazing patterns
including multi-paned and clear leaded. Interior ornament
includes art nouveau detailing; timber panelling to hallway,
stairs and some rooms; dining room has open timber roof
reminiscent of some of Mackintosh's work; other details,
including beaten brass overmantel panels, also in dining
room, do not look like the work either of Mackintosh or of
Keppie. Wavy boundary wall; Scots Renaissance detail to
gatepiers, pyramidal caps on balls.
