Description

Earlier 19th century with gatepiers possibly late 18th century. Single storey, asymmetrical 3-bay L-plan lodge in the style of William Burn with crowstepped gables. Later addition to rear re-entrant angle and garage to outer left. Cream ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings to front; grey ashlar sandstone to rear addition. Base course; cornice and blocking course to canted bay to left; hood moulds to door and windows; strip quoins.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: hood-moulded doorpiece to square-plan porch in re-entrant angle to centre; replacement timber door; crowstepped gablet above. Bipartite window in bay set back to left. Projecting, 3-light canted window in advanced bay to right; crowstepped gable above. Timber garage set back to outer left.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: Advanced, 2-bay addition to re-entrant angle with window to each bay; modern door to left return. Bipartite window in bay to short arm of original block; crowstepped gable above. Lean-to timber garage to outer left.

12-, 4- and 8-pane timber sash and case windows; grey slate roof; flat roof to additions; ashlar coped and corbelled, diamond gablehead stack to SW; ashlar coped, diamond stack to angle; ashlar crowsteps; cast- iron rainwater goods.

GATEPIERS AND QUADRANT WALLS: 4 square-plan, cream ashlar sandstone piers with moulded cornice and pyramidal cap, with decorative wrought- iron link. Cream ashlar sandstone quadrant walls with moulded ashlar cope.

Statement of Interest

The Estate Plan of 1790 shows two lodges at the East Gate, linked by quadrant walls to gatepiers. These piers have possibly survived, but the two lodges appear to have been replaced by this present lodge which first appears on the 1831 Estate Plans. A Group with Melville Castle, Chestnut House, Esk Cottage, Garden Cottage, Garden Farmhouse, Walled Garden and Lodge, South Driveway Bridge, South Lodge, Walled Garden Steading, and Willie's Temple.
