Description

Free church, possibly by Campbell Douglas of Glasgow and built in 1860 (Douglas is thought to have done work at nearby Kilarrow parish manse circa 1867). Occupies previously unbuilt site at edge of the 18th century planned town.

Gothic. 4-bay, gabled rectangular-plan, handsome rose window in (S) gable to Street above low, asymmetrically-placed vestry; gabled porch near N end of E flank wall. Lancets to flanks. Rubble-built, (imported) ashlar dressings, polychrome rubble detailing to arches and encircling rose window. Early glazing pattern survives; slate roofs.

Inside, open-timbered roof, arched braces carried on stone corbels. Original fixed seating removed (probably in 1950s), conversion to hall.

Enclosed by Rubble-built perimeter wall with simple gatepiers, also rubble.

Statement of Interest

No longer in ecclesiastical use.

In 1856, Bowmore was recognised as a preaching station; church and manse were erected in 1860, and a school soon afterwards (Ewing).
