Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, essentially L-plan, gabled farmhouse. Stugged snecked rubble, stugged ashlar dressings with droved margins, slate roof. Cast-iron ventilator grilles diagonally set in margined ashlar blocks at ground level to S and E elevations; single and paired windows, gable dormerheads breaking through eaves other than at principal gables, plate glass sash and case glazing, hoodmoulds with label stops; deep eaves with exposed purlin ends and plain bargeboards; cast-iron rainwater goods, ridge and end stacks with tall cans.

W ELEVATION: gable at right with single storey entrance porch advanced at left, window, panelled door with fanlight and stepped hoodmould to right return, gabled to each elevation; window to right and at 1st floor; window to left return elevation 1st floor; recessed bay to left, later lean-to at re-entrant, window to 1st floor; single storey L-plan service block recessed to far left, door and various windows, piended roof.

S ELEVATION: 3-bay. Centre bay, window to ground floor, dormerheaded window 1st; slightly advanced gable to right; canted window with chamfered margins and half-piended roof to ground floor, bipartite to 1st; gable to left; bipartite to ground floor, single window to 1st.

E ELEVATION: 2 windows to ground floor, window to gable at 1st floor left, 2 dormerheaded windows to right; single storey lean-to block to far right with 2 windows and lean-to.

N ELEVATION: border-glazed stair window to right of irregular M-gable; partly masked by lower service block.

INTERIOR: not seen.

Statement of Interest

Neither the farmhouse nor the steading appears on the 1860 OS map. The whole group of buildings succeeded the earlier steading and farmhouse (farmhouse listed as Lundie Castle) further up the hill sometime after 1860. The impressive shelter belt of trees enhances the setting of the house.
