Description

Earlier 19th century U-plan steading, mainly single storey with 1 and a half storey farmhouse at centre. Whinstone rubble with sandstone dressings, raised margins, painted on front. Scotc slate roofs.

FRONT ELEVATION: near symmetrical 3-bay farmhouse, with slightly advanced central gabled bay. 2-light door with multipane fanlight, recessed below narrow round-headed 6-pane window. Flanking bays have stone mullioned bipartites at ground, canted dormers at 1st, with pyramidal roofs. Gable end stacks with moulded copes and blocking course. To E, single-bay link to gabled end of steading range. Single window in link; 2, asymmetrical, in gable, latter with 4-pane top and 6-pane lower sashes, both with lying panes.

Projecting skews and gablehead chimney stack. To W, link as on E but with flanking square ventilators below eaves. Gabled end of steading range has pair slit ventilators at ground, single slit ventilator at attic level. W gable ridge taller than E.

REAR ELEVATION: W range single storey, being altered at time of listing. Central block has 3 irregular bays of farmhouse irregularly fenestrated, with out-of-character plastic-framed windows. E range shorter than W with large double-doored opening to E, single door to W. Rear gable end of range has pait slit ventilators at ground, triangular dovecote entry at attic.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: pair slit ventilators to E, then door, then single ventilator.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: from E window + door + 2 large and one small windows, 5 small circular ventilators (now blocked) below eaves.

Statement of Interest

A good example of a small 'improvement' steading notable for the quality of its construction.
