Wardrop and Reid, 1877. Arts and Crafts. Cruciform plan;
single storey and dormerless attic; asymmetrical coursed
stugged rubble, contrasting polished ashlar dressings.
Centre door on south and flanking narrow recessed windows
under deep timber framed gable supported on 4 wooden columns
on stone plinths to give verandah. 4-light window in centre of
gable; large canted bay window in east gable; decorative
bargeboards with carved foliage and apex finials at south and
east (facing drive and road), simple bargeboards elsewhere.
Centre ridge battery of 4 corniced stacks. Multi-pane glazing
in attic casements, and in upper lights of sashes, 2- and
4-pane in lower sashes.
Gate piers and gates; 2 pairs octagonal ashlar gate piers
with shallow pyramidal caps linked to similar end piers by
low coped quadrants; single large wooden carriage gate;
flanking matching pedestrican gates.
Initials JS for John Stirling who bought the estate of Fairburn
from Seaforth and Muirton from Robert Ainslie in 1865.
Present Fair-Burn House Built on or near site of former Muirton
House.
