David Bryce, dated 1858 and 1859. Large Baronial mansion,
possibly incorporating portions of earlier house. Coursed
grey rubble, contrasting tooled ashlar dressings. 2 storeys
and attic over raised basement, asymmetrical and gabled with
main entrance in raised basement in NE elevation, and SW
garden front entrance up flight of steps leading to door in
raised ground floor. Moulded doorpiece with monogram above
and studded door in NE projecting gabled bay, defined by
stepped string course continuing across NE front above raised
basement.
Angle turret, corbelled at ground floor at NE, corbelled
bartizans at SE and NW, each with bellcast slated conical
roof with finial. Canted window rises full height into
corbelled gable on SE elevation; diminutive attic windows and
gabletted dormers; varied multi-pane glazing patterns; dated
rainwater goods; coped ridge and end stacks; slate roofs.
Interior: large wooden staircase with barley-sugar twist
balusters; various original chimney pieces; decorative
plaster ceiling cornices; moulded door pieces and panelled
doors.
Adjoining service range; house linked at west to earlier 19th
century 2-storey, 6-bay former stable and carriage house
range; all rubble with tooled dressings. Outer paired bays
gabled with segmental headed carriage entrances, blocked with
inserted paired windows; 2 gabletted dormers break wallhead
in centre 12- and lying-pane glazing; crowsteps; coped ridge
and end stacks; slate roof.
