Description

1761, Sir James Clerk. Long oblong block. Piano nobile

(with attic storey above cornice) and basement. Ashlar.

Roofless. Corniced windows. Central hexastyle portico

with two-way stair. Projecting end bays (with Palladian

windows.) Rear has central gabled projecting bay (with broken- pedimented windows) approached by bridge. INTERIOR: now

gutted, formerly had many fine rooms.

Statement of Interest

Built by the 4th Laird of Penicuik and 3rd baronet, who had

travelled much in Italy and had made a special study of

architecture. Formerly much frequented by visitors who

came to see paintings particularly ceiling (by Alexander

Runciman) of Ossian's Hall. Burnt out by fire 1899.
