Description

Kiln Barn; probably mid 18th century, south arm of L-plan
barn range; 3-storeys rubble with ashlar dressings and with
long elevations facing east and west. Divided internally into
1/3rd and 2/3rds, the kiln formerly taking up the southern 1/3.
Large modern entrance slapped into kiln space; east winnowing
door enlarged with later flanking windows. Original long loft
window above door, with 2nd floor small window above. Similar
door and windows in west elevation now blocked. Forestair to
lofts at north gable; cat hole in door.
Canted stair well at south gable with piended slate roof and
internal cantilevered stone stair serving (blocked) kiln floor
entrance. Single east and west vents to kiln; paired gable
vents to kiln garret. Crowstepped gables; corniced ridge
stack; Caithness slate roof; stone ridge.
Interior; kiln floor removed; fire flue (in stair well wall)
blocked.
Internal stair from 1st floor loft to 2nd floor, from which
there is entrance to stone floored kiln garret with centre flue.
Further contemporary 3-storey, 3-bay crowstepped barn abuts
north gable forestair of kiln barn as north arm of L-plan;
windows and doors blocked; large door slapped in west gable;
large modern corrugated iron lean-to built against north
elevation.
Byres, cottage and dairy; long single storey range of
buildings running north/south from kiln barn south gable;
probably late 18th-early 19th century. All rubble with
tooled rubble dressings. 3-bay cottage with cheese-press
built into east front.
Dairy fills southernmost 3 bays, with crowsteps and end gable
ball finial; ridge stacks; graded Caithness slate roofs; stone
ridges.
Implement shed; mid 19th century 4-bay implement shed; open
bays face west, opposite dairy range. All rubble tooled.
Rubble dressings; graded Caithness slate roof.

Statement of Interest

Prevailing winds usually dictate site of Highland barns with

winnowing floors and vents at east and west. Kiln barn a rare

survival.

Ground floor adapted as bull pens.
