Description

William Robertson, 1822 (possibly after a design by James

Playfair, 1788). Hilltop polished ashlar open rotunda built

above and supported by partially exposed circular basement

tearoom. Rotunda entablature supported by 8 Ionic columns

above which is leaded dome with corniced plaster ceiling and

decorative centre rose.

Bowed 3-bay front to tearoom flanked by curved screen walls;

centre round-headed doorway and similar flanking windows; gutted/circular chamber with remains of alternate apsed and

rectangular niches; no ceiling or rotunda floor survives.

Circular plinth (formerly standing in centre of rotunda and

supporting now lost statue of Pomona) stands in centre of

tearoom floor.

Statement of Interest

Statue of Pomona (more probably of Fame) lost between

1939-45.

James Playfair's temple unexecuted but drawings in Seafield

papers.
