Description

Dated 1604, ashlar, bowtell-moulded with gablet and elaborate
finials.

Statement of Interest

This finely carved early bellcote, dated 1604, is a surviving fragment from the former kirk on the same site. It was probably set up within the Tullynessle Churchyard in 1876 when the present church was built. The pedimented bellcote with ornate finials may have been inspired by similarly ornamented dormer windows at nearby Huntly Castle (added around 1600 - see separate listing) and/or may have been the work of the same stonemason (Information courtesy of a member of the public, 2023).
