Description

Dated 1593. Lower half of large L-plan rubble-built tower
house, two storeys, upper part and gable of east wing demolished
1792. Present east gable, upper floor of wing and battlemented
parapet with bartizans, James Duncan 1874. Restored, harled
with dressings exposed, J J Meldrum 1971-73, main jamb 44' x
34', lying N-S, ground floor vaulted in 2 compartments,
passage on east side with rib-vault over entrance, 2 turnpike
stairs at S end; 1st floor hall, 20' x 30', has high rib-vault
in 2 compartments, oratory (or 'piper's gallery' in some
descriptions) in elevated rib-vaulted window embrasure over
screens passage at E end, quatrefoil balcony is Duncan
restoration. Outbuilding with short single-storey link to tower
adjoins on north.

Statement of Interest

Belonged to the Barclays until 1733 when the estate was sold to

the Earl of Findlater, subsequently acquired by Aberdeen

Endowments Trust: castle purchased by Mr and Mrs Marc Ellington

1971 and restored by them.
