Scotland's first Savings Bank, now a museum. Built perhaps as
early as circa 1760, probably as 2 adjoining single storey
3-bay cottages, each having off-centre door (door to east now
a window). All whitewashed rubble with contrasting painted
margins; 4-pane sashes. Stacks removed. Slate roof with 2
skylights. Cottage to west formerly Male and Female Friendly
Society's Hall where savings bank began in May 1810 by Rev.
Henry Duncan; narrow windows in latter, raised probably in
19th century.
Listed category A for historic importance; on architectural
grounds, this building is spoilt by the removal of the
chimneyheads.
