Inscription "A Viegl/Mentone" (ie France). Erected 1880. Memorial to Sir James Matheson (1796-1878), owner of Lewis since 1844, and builder of Lews Castle. French Renaissance; marble; baldacchino with round-arched openings, engaged Corinthian column at each angle, raised on pedestal; leaded dome. Underneath, a white marble pedestal, inscribed, empty elliptical panel presumably contained a bronze. Inscriptions:

b. "Sir James Matheson/born at Shiness November 17th 1796/married at Edinburgh November 9th 1843/died at Mentone, France, December 31st 1878". c. "In life a consistent Christian possessed of those Social virtues conducive to the happiness of others, and truly has it been said of him that he was a child of God living evidently under the influence of his holy spirit".
d. Also memorial to Mary Jane Matheson "who during her husband's life aided him in the benevolent and philanthropic works carried out for the benefit of the island of the Lews and its inhabitants".
