Description

Early 19th century. Single storey and basement cottage, forming

2 storeys on falling ground to river. Painted rubble. Modern rendered extension to E, built upon original rubble wall to N.

S (SMITHY LANE) ELVATION: 3 stone steps up to door to outer right. Window to outer left. 2 windows to extension to right.

W ELEVATION: 2-storey. Boarded door to left to basement.

N ELEVATION: 2 windows to each floor. 2 windows to upper floor to extension to left.

Largely modern small-pane timber glazing; 4-pane fixed glazing to basement to N. Small purple slates. Modern rendered gablehead stacks to cottage to E and W. No skews.

Statement of Interest

1 Smithy Lane was built sometime between 1794 and 1840; the building is not shown on the "Plan ... of New Luce" of 1794, but it is shown on the "Plan of the Village of New Luce" of 1840. Listed for group value with Cross Water Bridge (see separate listing).
