U-plan group sited on falling ground, comprised of 2-storey, 3-bay farmhouse and obliquely set, free-standing ranges; E range single storey, W range single storey with hayloft/granary. Rubble with roughly squared and stugged dressings; dry dash to front and side of house; brick additions and repairs and timber lintels to ranges.

FARMHOUSE: SE (entrance) elevation: facing open court, wallhead raised at least once. Door off-centre to right, blank at 1st floor above; window to each floor in flanking bays.

NW (rear) elevation: with 2 irregular windows at ground (smaller window possibly reinstated from earlier property) and small 1st floor window at centre.

SW gable: opening at ground.

INTERIOR: contains most original window fittings and joinery. 1 fireplace removed. Windows blocked (1993). End stacks with circular and polygonal cans. Ashlar coped skews. Grey slates (slipping to rear).

NE RANGE: containing barn with opening in gabled SE end. Brick stack to S corner. Several openings blocked and altered.

SW RANGE: sliding machinery door and flat-roofed dormer breaking eaves to courtyard side. Hayloft/granary door in SE gable accessed by timber ladder. Later opening to upper level in NW gable end. Substantial brick additions to outer elevation. Linked at N angle by brick screen wall with farmhouse.

Corrugated sheet metal roofing.

Statement of Interest

Mosshouses is a plain and simple example of a traditional steading arrangement of a type dating from the late 18th century (see Fenton and Walker), with farmhouse heading the group. The farmhouse heree is surprisingly placed at the foot of the group on falling ground, the reason probably being that the pond and well lie in the more typical place at the other end of the court. The 1st edition OS map marks a threshing machine adjoined to rear of SW range, currently replaced by brick additions.
