Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 5-bay commercial and domestic building with Classical detailing including distinctive pilastered ground floor shop front. Principal (E) elevation with stugged granite ashlar, polished ashlar base course, deeply projecting cornice. 6-bay fixed-pane plate glass windows to shop. 2-leaf door to far left bay with glass fan-light above; entrance to No 22 at 4th bay with glazed margins. Tall openings to 1st floor with narrow aprons. 3 segmental arched dormers; pair of pedimented dormers to rear.

Multi-pane margined timber sash and case windows; grey slate; mansard roof; ashlar skews and skewputts; cast-iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Interest

Nos 20 and 22 Back Wynd is a good example of the paired-back Classicism which is distinctive to central Aberdeen. The building has a particularly distinctive 6-bay pilastered shopfront which integrates effectively with its neighbours and forms an important part of the streetscape of Back Wynd. Before the building of Union Street, Back Wynd led down to the Green and was the last street on this side of the Medieval town.
