Description

1887. 2-storey and attic, compact 7-bay former college building with central gable and simple Gothic decoration. Grey granite ashlar; base, string and blocking courses. Bipartite windows with chamfered reveals. 3-bay centre gable with simple, pinnacled buttresses and apex pinnacle; round-arched opening at attic level. Similar pinnacles over outer angle buttress strips. Elaborate, crocketted and leaded central ridge fleche with finial and weathervane.

Archway to left: pointed arch with crenelated and coped parapet; small sandstone statuette of John Knox to centre. Finely wrought double leaf iron gates. Irregular massing to altered N elevation with segmental-arch doorway to re-entrant angle; arcaded ground floor openings to left.

Predominantly non-traditional tilt and turn glazing; grey slate; chamfered end stacks; ashlar skews; clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Interest

This compact Gothic building with its simple but refined detailing contributed significantly to the run of buildings at Charlotte Street. Its use of Gothic detailing sets the building apart. The tall fleche provides a striking focal point with its intricate crocketted and finialled design. It is likely that the statue of John Knox originated with an earlier building. Converted to flatted apartments (resurvey 2006)
