George Coutts 1899-1901 (dated 1900). Imposing free style
4-storey and attic corner block comprising Public House at
ground floor and tenement above. Granite built, 3 symmetrical
bays to Crown Street linked to 4 symmetrical Langstane Place
bays by canted angle. Pilastered ground floor (Modern shop to
left on Crown St). Entrance to upper floors from No 8 Crown
Street, forming narrow central bay, with round-arched
keystoned head supported on stumpy pilasters; shallow
2-storey oriel above, bipartite in 3rd and pedimented
(datestone below) wallhead dormer flanked by stacks, outer
bays above ground pilastered, with bipartites and tripartite
pedimented wallhead dormers linked to central dormer by
balustrades. Canted angle with pub entrance at ground,
bipartites above and shallow bell-cast roof with pilastered
and arcaded cupola fishscale roof with finial.
Langstone Place similarly detailed with single windows to
central bays and central, corbelled stack rising through
eaves and flanked by wallhead dormers to form free scrolled
broken pediment. Slate roof.
Engraved, Art Nouveau glass survives in pub windows. Interior
bar fittings now modern.
