Later 19th century. 4-storey and attic 3-bay classical tenement building with gabled rear elevation (W) to Stirling Street. Grey granite ashlar with finely tooled dressings. Consoled cornices to entrance at right and 1st storey windows. Band courses. Cornice and blocking course. Segmental arched windows with aprons to top storey. Timber pedimented dormers.
Predominantly timber sash and case windows to upper floors.
INTERIOR: not seen at time of survey ( 2006).
This is a well detailed classical tenement building which makes a positive contribution to the streetscape. The consoled brackets in particular are an interesting decorative feature on the otherwise plain classical exterior. Segmental-arched openings are a particular feature of 19th century Aberdeen and enliven that otherwise simple classical façade.
Exchange Street and the surrounding area was redeveloped in the mid-late nineteenth century as a mixed use area with housing, commercial buildings and industrial units. This building sits on the site of a previous sawmill. The tall, classical style of this building with large windows is typical of the area.
