Description

Early to mid 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 6-bay pair of traditional houses with 2-storey houses adjoining at rear. Chlorite-slate rubble with large quoins, projecting cills and slab lintels. Base course to No 43.

NOS 43 AND 45:

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Bays to left with swept canopy and decorative brackets over modern door and windows in flanking bays at ground, regular fenestration to 1st floor and canted dormer windows over outer bays. Bays to right as above but with corniced and pilastered doorpiece and part-glazed timber door with plate glass fanlight.

E ELEVATION: blank gabled elevation.

W ELEVATION: gabled elevation with window to left at each floor.

NO 43A:

E ELEVATION: centre bay with door to ground and window above, window to each floor in penultimate bay to right and further window beyond at ground; 2 windows to left also at ground.

S ELEVATION: gabled elevation with window to left at ground and 2 windows at 1st floor.

W ELEVATION: largely blank elevation overlooking courtyard.

IVY COTTAGE:

W ELEVATION: timber porch in bay to right of centre at ground, windows in flanking bays and regular fenestration to 1st floor.

S ELEVATION: gabled elevation with modern conservatory at ground.

E ELEVATION: largely blank elevation overlooking courtyard.

Lying 12-pane glazing pattern to No 45 at N, 4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns elsewhere all in timber sash and case windows; modern top-opening glazing to No 43A. Graded grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and some cans. Overhanging eaves.

Statement of Interest

Group with Nos 13-19, 35-41, 4-8, 12-16, 22-26 and 30-50 Kenmore Street. The present houses in Kenmore Street were built on the site of 18th century flax spinners cottages.
