The palace-fronted square as proposed by John Robertson in 1799 was not pursued, instead individual feuars were allowed to develop the square. Noted as the Town and Country Club in the AYR AND DISTRICT DIRECTORY of 1926-27, this may account for the 3-storey height, in the predominantly 2-storey Wellington Square.
