Description

Circa 1825, two-storey, three-bay villa over sunken basement. Built as Dollar Academy staff residence. Whin rubble with contrasting tooled margins and ashlar dressings. Centre door with shallow block pediment on simplified consoles. Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Piended slate roof. Coped chimneystacks to end walls with clay cans.

Statement of Interest

Burnside House was built circa 1825 as accommodation for a schoolmaster at the request of the Trustees of Dollar Academy. The previous listed building record attributed this building to William Henry Playfair. However at the time of writing we do not have documentary evidence to support this claim. Playfair designed a building at Dollar Academy, from 1818-20, as well as houses in Academy Place around 1820 (see separate listings). The doorpiece at Burnside House is similar in style to Playfair's work at Academy Place, but there are distinct differences in the design of Burnside House and Academy Place, particularly in the stonework detailing. It is likely that the architect of Burnside was inspired by Playfair's work. Listed building record updated in 2014 and minor amendment in 2021..
