Description

1838-40. Rectangular plan church with S bell turret and
spire. Red whinstone, snecked and squared; droved ashlar
dressings. Catcraig ashlar tower and belfry. Slated roof.
Hoodmoulded openings.
S FRONT: 3-bay; gable front with octagonal finials at angles.
Advanced centre bay rising to tower above. Simple, boldly
curved door surrounded. Tripartite pointed arch above with
interesting tracery. Flanking Y-traceried 2-lightwindows.
Louvred openings to tower. Octagonal steeple with blind slits
and slated roof; swept eaves. Moulded pedestal finials on
skews, echoing steeple. 3-bay E ad W elevation with
Y-traceried windows.
N (REAR): 2 Y-traceried windows and stained glass at centre.
Circular window in gable head. Stone cross finial.
Low parapet wall; railings removed. Square gatepiers;
wrought-iron lamp stands.
Modern parish hall extension to NW.
INTERIOR: panel fronted gallery supported on cast-iron
columns. Arcaded frontage to communion table. Raised central
pulpit, flanked by corner organ to E.

Statement of Interest

Ecclesiastical building in use as such. Founded through East

Lothian Society for Church Extension. Became a Free Church

1843-50, then returning to Quoad Sacra status until disjoined

from Dunbar in 1863. Land purchased from Earl of Lauderdale

by Trustees of Belhaven Free Church and School 1850. Building

cost $1,690.
