Description

James MacLaren, dated 1868. 5 Jacobean-style tenements
stepped in fall of ground. Coursed and squared rubble
with ashlar dressings.
Each tenement bounded by tall pilasters with urn finials.
Central ground floor consoled corniced doorpiece with
single and bipartite window to each side. Flat mouldings
at ground floor, bipartites with scrolled shields. 1st
floor windows pilastered and corniced, linked by aprons
to 2nd floor windows. Main band course. Tall wall-head
stack, lower part rubble-built, upper part ashlar with
flutings and apron panels. Single and bipartite dormers.
Steep pitched and platformed slate roof.
Cartouche over entrance to No 289 inscribed "C L Gowrie
Place 1868".
All windows sash and case, 4-pane glazing pattern to
single-lights, 2 panes to bipartites.
Each entrance approached by steps between elaborately
capped gatepiers. Low coped garden walls with wrought-iron
railings (missing from No 297).
