Description

Probably Ireland and Maclaren circa 1875, 2-storey terrace
of 9 2-bay houses, ashlar-fronted, some now painted,
rubble-built sides and rear. Windows and doors of S
elevation simply architraved.
S elevation: each house defined by pilaster strips, 2-bay with
canted bay rising through both floors, corniced at ground
floor and plain entrance beneath single window. Main cornice
and blocking course. Nos 243-255 arranged symmetrically with
paired entrances and paired canted bays. Nos 239 and 241
break the rhythm. Single 4-light canted bay to No 257.
W elevation: No 257, coursed rubble with ashlar dressings.
Advanced bay to left, re-entrant angle with pilastered and
corniced porch. Stair window over. Gabled E elevation.
Piended gabled and platformed slate roof. Steeper pitch
to No 249 with round-headed dormers. Modern dormer to
No 239. Ashlar ridge stacks.
Sash and case windows, 2-pane glazing pattern.
Rubble-built boundary walls with simple ashlar gateposts.
