Circa 1830-40. Pair of 2-storey and basement, 3-bay houses
linked by James Ireland and James MacLaren in 1880 as
offices for James Valentine and Son. Ashlar fronts with
rubble sides.
N elevation: 2 2-storey 3-bay houses with margined windows,
(1 later altered to a door), and central consoled and
corniced doors, that at right altered to a window in 1880.
Centre infilling bay defined by channelled pilaster strips
added 1880; consoled and pedimented door with flanking
windows, 1st floor tripartite in lugged architrave. Cornice
and parapet with diminutive consoled pedimented feature.
S elevation: 3-storey due to slope of land, No 154 having
canted end bays, added circa 1860. Centre advanced
tripartite, 1880.
Rubble-built gable-end stacks, slate roofs, long industrial
skylight inserted at No 154. Sash and case windows, most
with late 19th century 2-pane pattern.
INTERIOR: twin Corinthian columned entrance hall.
Former head office of James Valentine and Sons, printers
and publishers, popularisers of the post and greeting card.
The printing works behind is 20th century and of little
interest.
In poor condition and partially fire damaged (seen 1987)
