Description

Dr Reginald Fairlie 1933 with circa 1958 church by A R
Conlon, tympanum carved by Hew Lorimer. Monastic complex,
red brick with concrete sill and lintel courses.
2-storey HALL at W: 7 round-arched ground floor windows
with concrete tympana, rectangular windows over. 3rd bay
from right advanced, large rectangular window with ashlar
architrave. Niche with statue of St Francis over. N gable has
similar statue over a single bay flat-roofed projection.
S gable 3-bay with oculus. W elevation 2 small gabled
porches. Tall stacks. Swept pantiled roofs.
LINK: 2-storey gabled projection from E face of hall,
simple door approached by steps in re-entrant angle. 1-storey
passage, blind to S, arcaded to N, arches infilled with
cement render. Pantiled roof.
E QUADRANGLE of domestic buildings, 1- 2- and 3-storey.
Near symmetrical 2-storey S elevation with twin advanced
gabled bays and wallhead stack to right. E elevation 3-storey
in fall of ground, irregular fenestration. Arched windows
to courtyard in manner of cloister. Swept slate roofs.
Windows metal-framed casements and top-hopper types, but sash
and case in parts of the domestic ranges.
CHURCH circa 1958 brick and pebble-dashed, gabled but with
flat-roofed projecting sacristy and portico approached by
steps. Triple doors below notable sculptured tympanum by
Hew Lorimer.

Statement of Interest

An ecclesiastical building in use as such. Fairlie's proposed

great Franciscan basilica was not built. Services were held

in the upper part of the hall until the smaller church was

built. The latter is listed for the quality of Lorimer's

sculpture.
