Description

H and F Thomson, 1911. 2-storey, 3 principal-bay, masonic hall in severe design with classical details; ground floor shops. Banded ashlar masonry, slate roof.

N ELEVATION: central Doric columned doorpiece with cornice and deep set door; flanking shopfronts with off-centre doors and bowed plate glass windows, slightly set-back close entrance bay at left. Three 12-pane casement windows at 1st floor with channelled margins and large mannered apron to centre window; dentilled cornice with blocking course. Mutual gable stack and half-piended roof at right, skew gable at left; large rooflight.

INTERIOR: vestibule with grained plaster panels and moulded festoons depicting masonic symbols; half-glazed 2-leaf doors. Hall at 1st floor; moulded cornice with black and white triangular frieze and plaster tassels; lunette at W with painted depiction of Broughty Castle and at E with masonic cymbols, signed A Low 8/19 and J Morrocco 1979. Cove ceiling with large central astragalled rooflight, 2 flanking ventilation grills of star pattern. Memorial stone dated 11 November 1911 at N wall, war memorial at W wall.
