Earlier 18th century 2-storey 5-bay town house, with ground
floor altered and 2 upper storeys added all probably circa
1860. Demolished 1984-5 retaining facade, remainder rebuilt
with steel frame, timber panelling of "Prince Charlie's room"
largely reinstated and painted. Facade painted render and
ashlar dressings, rusticated quoins and 1st floor architraves
of original house. Central door in doorcase; sash windows;
iron railing over cornice of original house; slate roof.
Built as town house of Richard Lowthian of Staffold;
headquarters of Prince Charles Edward Stuart for 3 days in
1745. Originally the 1st floor had timber panelling
throughout.
