Description

Earlier 18th century. 2-stage, lectern dovecot. Rubble with ashlar dressings, quoins, rat-course. Square-plan on rising ground. Aligned NE to SW.

NE ELEVATION: door at ground level; stone surround.

NW ELEVATION: door at ground level; stone surround.

SW ELEVATION: small arched opening above rat course. 6 flight holes placed dormer-like in slope of roof. Ball finial on E 'stack'.

Grey slate roof; crow-stepped gables with console skewputts, stone roof ridge, pyramidal finial.

INTERIOR: not seen April 1992. Reported to be intact, now used as store. Apparently 679 flight-holes.

Statement of Interest

The dovecot is contemporary with the walled garden and belongs to an earlier building phase of the house, probably when in possession of the Monteith family. Foxhall House and garden and Foxhall stables and cottages are listed separately.
