Description

James Simpson, dated and signed 1879. Pair of near-identical 4-storey and attic 7-bay tenements on corner site with shops at ground floor, former worker?s housing for Crabbie & Co. opposite with vaulted basements and underground links. Cream sandstone, squared and snecked stugged rubble with polished dressings, squared and snecked rubble to rear. Shopfronts basket-arched with plain band course above; cill courses and bracketted cills to 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor; lintels circling over floral roundel at 1st and 2nd floor; eaves cornice; pedimented dormers.

NE (GREAT JUNCTION STREET) ELEVATION: 14-bay mirrored about centre with regular fenestration of single and bipartite windows; each tenement with common stair doorways to centre, No 129 with 2-leaf panelled door and 3-pane fanlight; shopfronts flanking, Nos 125, 127, 137, 141 boxed-in. Elevations above each with centre and inner flanking bays slightly advanced over scrolled brackets clasping ground floor cill course, hoodmoulded panels with floral carving initialled ?J C? at 2nd floor, shouldered wallhead stacks. Single dormers over single windows; canted over bipartites.

NW (BONNINGTON ROAD) ELEVATION: 6-bay including slightly recessed curved corner bay to outer left, detailed as above with single windows and curved roof. Bay to left of corner bay blank with panel as above (dated, architect?s name), shouldered wallhead stack. Single windows and dormers to remaining bays.

SE ELEVATION: truncated gable with paired stacks, single windows to centre.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: single windows and plain dormers; return elevation of corner tenement gabled with apex stack and large modern trompe l?oeil mural.

Mostly 4-pane timber sash and case windows, some plate glass glazing, some modern replacement windows. Slate mansard roof; 3 apex, 3 wallhead stacks (see above), mutual stacks. Moulded eaves gutters.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

Statement of Interest

Group with Nos 124 Great Junction Street, and Nos 106-120 Great Junction Street and 12,13 Yardheads. Built by John Crabbie and Co, wine merchants, as accommodation for workers of their brewery on the opposite side of Great Junction Street The tenements are connected to the works by underground tunnels and have vaulted storage basements.
