Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay L-plan offices with Scottish Renaissance details, pend to left, forming part of irregular terrace. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Roll-moulded windows, segmental-arched at ground floor; stone mullions and moulded transoms to 1st floor windows.

E (LEITH WALK) ELEVATION: 3-bay; depressed-arched pend in left bay with moulded surround, keystone and voussoirs; iron gates and spurs;

3 brackets to continuous cornice over pend-arch and doorway flanking to right; tripartite window at 1st floor. Depressed-arch doorway in centre bay, detailed as pend arch; 2-leaf panelled door, plate glass fanlight; bipartite window at 1st floor above. Parapet over. 2-storey canted window with swept lead roof and scalloped flashing in gabled bay to right; tripartite window at ground floor, quadripartite at 1st floor; bracketted cornice to bipartite window in gablehead; coping scrolled at apex with finial; moulded shafts flanking waved panels at foot of gablehead (finials missing from panel to right), each with rainwater spout.

W (REAR) ELEVATION: 3 single windows over pend; secondary doorway to left of pend. Single storey wing advanced to left with segmental-arched windows on return and finialled end gable.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof. Some original rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

Statement of Interest

Craig & Rose, the long established paint manufacturers, are most renowned for supplying paint to the Forth Rail Bridge. The paint manufacture works to the rear of the office have been much altered and are not included in the listing.
