Description

Leonard Stokes, 1901-3; extended to rear by Office of Works, 1912. 3-storey and attic 12-bay telephone exchange. Roughly polished cream sandstone ashlar with harled infill to upper floors. Large arcaded windows at ground below projecting egg and dart moulded cornice; door set into deep cavetto moulded frame. Outer bays with giant pilasters and open pediments (further bay to E with simple architraved door at ground). 1st and 2nd floor windows united by roll-moulded architrave and ashlar bands. Cornice and solid harled parapet. Rear elevation simplified harled version of above. Timber sash and case 8-pane windows with flush upper sashes. INTERIOR: converted to office use.
