Description

Mid 19th century incorporating 17th century fabric. Tall, ornately decorated baluster sundial raised on two octagonal steps. Inscription panels at base enclosed by bracketed legs; baluster shaft above with foliate carving supporting circular drum with neoclassical urns, putti and swags in relief; 4 dials above; tapered finial ornamented with scrolled brackets.

Statement of Interest

The sundial at Saughton Park is a large and elaborate example of a baluster sundial, with detailed carving and several inscriptions. The dials and finial are 17th century and the rest is a 19th century reworking. The dial is a remaining vestige of Saughton House, a 17th century villa that burned down in the mid 20th century.
