Description

After 1792-4. 3-storey basement and attic, 9-bay former pair of classical houses with flats above. Cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Droved at basement and 2nd floor; V-jointed rustication at ground; polished at 1st floor with band course above; eaves cornice; long and short quoins to S. Outer bays united as pair of bows; doors to central 3 bays (right bay slightly broader); 6-pane rectangular fanlight at centre; those flanking arched with radiating fanlights, that to right recessed. Pair of piend-roofed bipartite dormers, and further garret dormer and skylights.

Largely blank rubble gable with windows at centre.

4-storey 4-bay rubble rear elevation.

Timber sash and case windows; mostly 12-pane but some plate glass. Ashlar coped skews; rendered stack to S, stone mutual stack to N; grey slates.

INTERIOR: No 55 largely refurbished 1995; not seen.

Statement of Interest

A matching pair to Nos 45-49 Castle Street (see separate listing). Part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
