1792-4. 3-storey basement and attic, 3-bay former classical house. Droved cream sandstone with polished dressings. V-jointed rustication at ground; eaves cornice. Arched doorpiece with modern 2-leaf panelled door and radiating fanlight. Pair of piend-roofed tripartite dormers.
12-pane timber sash and case windows. Ashlar coped mutual skew to S (rebuilt brick stack); continuous roof to N (rendered stack); grey slates.
INTERIOR: enriched ceiling to Hall. Curving cantilevered stone stair set at right angles to axis; alternate decorative cast-iron banisters to 2nd floor, then stair extended to attic - no natural light; timber stair to garret. 4-storey to rear with full-height bow to S; coved rooms to attic storey at rear. Thoroughly modernised for office use in 1987.
The former attic flats were accessed from the common stair at No 30 (see separate listing), although the buildings do not appear to be one build, the coursing and cornice being different. The building is now a single entity. Part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. A Group with Nos 22-32 (even nos) Castle Street.
