Description

Robert Reid and William Sibbald, early 19th century, with later alterations. 4-storey and basement, 8-bay terraced tenement, with 4th storey as wallhead attic. Broached ashlar sandstone; V-jointed rustication at principal floor. Base course; band courses between basement and principal floor, principal and 1st floors; projecting cills to 1st and 2nd floor windows; cornice at 2nd floor; string course and blocking course at 3rd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

W (PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 9-panel timber common stair door, with blind rectangular fanlight, centred at principal floor; 4-bay shop front to left comprising round-arched doorpiece with 6-panel timber door and radial semicircular fanlight in 3rd bay from left (No 35), flanked to left by 2-bay pilastered and corniced shop windows, with pair of plate glass windows, and to right by later 19th century canted window with cornice; pair of 6-panel timber doors with 2-pane rectangular fanlights in bay 3rd from right; 2-bay pilastered and corniced shop front to outer right, with plate glass window to left, glazed door with 2-pane rectangular fanlight to right. Regular fenestration to floors above, with cills lowered to right and penultimate bay to right at 1st floor. Basement comprising 2-bay shop front to left, with 2-panel glazed timber door and multi-pane window; 2-bay shop front to left of centre, with glazed timber door and multi-pane window, with elaborate gilded shop sign.

N ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (3-41 great King Street).

S ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (25-29 Dundas Street).

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered and broached ashlar ridge stacks; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.

RAILINGS: ashlar copes surmounted by iron railings with spear-headed balusters.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Dundas Street was part of the first extension of the New Town planned by Reid and Sibbald in 1802. Building began in 1807.
