Mid to later 18th century; recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners, circa 1970. 3-storey, 3-bay tenement forming part of terrace. Harled and limewashed; painted concrete surrounds and ingoes; cills slightly projecting. Harled turnpike stair to rear.
E (FISHMARKET SQUARE) ELEVATION: boarded timber door to ground floor entry in bay to outer right; single windows in bays to centre and outer left. Regular fenestration to 1st and 2nd floors.
W (WESTER CLOSE) ELEVATION: full-height 2-bay turnpike stair in bay to outer right (converted to form access to No 1). Single doorway to ground facing W in bay to left of stair; regularly fenestrated to 1st and 2nd floors.
12-pane timber sash and case windows to both elevations. Machine-made red pantiled roof with grey slate easing course; precast concrete skews to standard detail. Coped apex stacks to N and S with circular cans.
B Group with Nos 1-8 Fishmarket Square, Nos 40-42 Main Street and Nos 1-8 Wester Close (see separate list entries). Plans by Ian Lindsay & Partners (1971) for the development and refurbishment of Fishmarket Square indicate that this block originally had an exterior stair to the front with 2 storeys and a basement. Indeed, the 1970 listing describes it as being "2-storey and basement, harled with forestair". Despite the plans stating that the building "is not included in the contract... to be left untouched", subsequent alterations display features similar to those within Lindsay?s remit. Note, the harling and limewash, the smooth cement surrounds to openings, the red pantiles and the timber sash and case windows. Despite their irregularity, the homogeneity of elevations in both Wester Close and Fishmarket Square has been retained. Previously listed as No 12 Wester Close with No 11 and Nos 3 and 4 Fishmarket Square.
