Description

Circa 1775; refaced and extra storey added 1829 to scheme by Thomas Hamilton; alterations by John Lessels, 1875 and Hippolyte Blanc, 1881; major refurbishment and rebuilding by Hurd Rolland partnership, 1990-3. Dissimilar pair of 4-storey, 3-bay former classical houses built out at ground incorporating basement. Polished cream sandstone ashlar (cleaned with some replacement stone). Unified projecting 3-bay frontage at ground, centre bay recessed, with corner piers, dentilled cornice and balustraded parapet; right bay frames plate glass office entrance (centre and right bays modern copies of left bay). 1st and 2nd floor with architraved windows; at 1st floor centre windows canted and united with flanking windows by cornices (those to E slightly smaller with brattishing to centre); moulded 2nd floor cill course to W block. Dentilled cornice; 3rd floor with windows set in square recesses. Pair of slate-hung piend-roofed dormers with canted corners.

Extended and rebuilt to rear.

Timber sash and case windows; plate glass at 1st floor, 12-pane above. Ashlar coped skews; corniced ashlar stacks, rebuilt at centre.

INTERIOR: modern commercial interiors; shop with Blanc?s interior largely rebuilt by Hurd Rolland Partnership.

Statement of Interest

Originally 3-storey; Nos 39-45 with unified extra storey of 1830, probably by Thomas Hamilton (see separate listings). The canted window at No 41 was added by John Lessels in 1875; in 1881 Hippolyte Blanc remodelled the ground floor for William Johnstone & Co. There is a break in the build between the two houses. Part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. A Group with Nos 33-63 (odd nos) George Street.
