Description

Circa 1775; later 19th century additions. 4-storey 3-bay former classical house with later 19th century shop built out at ground. Droved cream sandstone ashlar (stonecleaned) with polished dressings. Corniced shopfront contains modern plate glass shop and door to upper floors. 2nd floor eaves cornice survives below later 3rd floor with bracketed cill course and cornice.

Timber sash and case plate glass windows. Stone stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

Statement of Interest

4th storey probably added at the same time as the shopfront. Same build as No 56-8. A Group with Nos 30-58 (even nos) George Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
