William and Lewis A Wallace, early 19th century. 4-Storey and basement 7-bay symmetrical tenement in terraced site. Broached sandstone ashlar; polished V-jointed rustication at principal floor. Cill course to 1st qand 3rd floors; blocking course. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.
W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: flush-panelled common stair door to centre, flanked by flush panelled doors, with radial semicircular fanlights, flanked in turn by windows in bays to outer left and right. Regular fenestration to floors above. Flagged basement area; coped rubble retaining walls; vertically boarded timber doors to cellars.
N ELEVATION (JAMAICA STREET WEST RETURN): broached rubble; windows to centre at 2nd and 3rd floors.
Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Harled gablehead stack, coped with circular cans.
INTERIORS: not seen 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.
RAILINGS AND LAMPS: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamps with glass globes.
Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
